The Circle of Life - The Lion King Musical, Singapore Review

My love for musicals stems from having worked in theatre productions - however, this time, the experience was different.

If anyone knows me well enough, they know I'm a huge theatre geek and will obsess over a new musical every time you see me. Hence, I knew that I had to go see The Lion King during its run at the Marina Bay Sands Theatre in Singapore. Conveniently, I had to write a paper about a ticketed show for a class at college - timing couldn't be any more perfect.
The Lion King has been the most successful and longest-running production on Broadway since 1997 and has grossed over $1 billion in ticket sales. With music by Tim Rice and Elton John as well as music score by Hans Zimmer, it is no wonder why this Disney classic-turned-musical was a massive hit.
Having bought the cheapest tickets the production had to offer, I went in thinking I would have an obscured view of the stage. I told myself that even if I couldn't see the stage properly, I would be going for the experience. (boy, was I wrong) The seats were surprisingly unobscured and you could see the entire stage without a problem. In fact, I think it was a really good deal considering the price I paid. Seats were comfy with ample leg room, and the theatre itself was maintained really well.

The show begins at 7:30pm sharp, and you are reminded to quickly find your seats by a public address announcer. Following theatre etiquette, you should ideally arrive 15 minutes before show time, or you will be refused entry until an appropriate time in the show to walk in.
As the lights dim and the opening line of The Circle of Life is sung, you will immediately get chills running down your body as the production goes full swing. The iconic number from the original Disney film seems to have a better body to it when performed live, with traditional African percussion and vocals. (I'm getting chills as I write this)
The big thing thats sets apart The Lion King from every other production, is its inventive use of puppetry, technology and space. The production is not limited to just the stage, but includes the audience; giving you a really immersive experience. (I'm trying really hard not to spoil the surprises for those who have not watched it) Set pieces involve mechanically controlled structures, screens and a clever use of light and illusion. It is then that you realise how much work and coordination is put into having the show run smoothly and coherently. I cannot imagine having one of the mechanically controlled set pieces fail in the middle of the show.
Though the storyline remains similar to the original film, there are many subtle additions and subtractions the theatrical version has that enriches the story even more. What's even more interesting is the perfectly timed Singlish puns they have slid perfectly into the show (spoiler alert!!). Having watched the original film and knowing the story like the back of my hand, it was impossible to peel my eyes away from the stage. Every element of the production was so well thought through and it still captivates you - no matter your age.
Was it worth it? Yes, absolutely. It was worth every penny I paid. Bring your children, family, partners or even go alone if you have to. I can guarantee that this production will tug at your heartstrings and you will not leave with dry eyes. 10/10 would recommend.
